CABIN CREW & AIRPORT CAREER FAQs

Thinking about becoming cabin crew or working at an airport? Find clear answers about entry requirements, English ability, height, appearance, qualifications and training options.

1. What education qualifications do I need to become cabin crew or airport ground staff?

Entry requirements differ between airlines and airport employers. Many entry-level positions accept applicants with SPM, O-Level, UEC or an equivalent secondary-school qualification.

Some international airlines may prefer candidates with a diploma or degree, while certain airport positions may require qualifications related to customer service, tourism, hospitality or aviation.

Students who are unsure about their eligibility may contact IETA for an individual assessment.

2. My English is only average. Can I still join the course?

Yes. You do not need perfect English before starting your training.

However, cabin crew and airport staff must be able to communicate clearly with passengers, understand instructions and respond professionally in different situations. Applicants with weaker English may need additional language training and more speaking practice before attending airline interviews.

IETA assesses each student’s current level and recommends a suitable programme based on their English ability, confidence and career goals.

3. What is the minimum age to become cabin crew?

The minimum age varies between airlines. Many airlines accept applicants from 18 years old, while some international airlines may require applicants to be at least 20 or 21.

There may also be different age requirements for airport ground-service positions.

Always check the official recruitment requirements of the airline or employer before applying.

4. Is there a minimum height requirement?

Height requirements vary according to the airline and position.

Some airlines publish a minimum height, while others use an arm-reach test to determine whether candidates can safely reach emergency and cabin equipment.

As a general guide for IETA’s cabin crew-related programmes:

  • Female applicants are normally recommended to be at least 157 cm.
  • Male applicants are normally recommended to be at least 165 cm.

Meeting the programme guideline does not guarantee eligibility for every airline. Final recruitment requirements are determined by each airline.

5. Is there a weight requirement?

Most airlines do not publish a fixed weight requirement.

Candidates are normally expected to have a healthy and proportionate appearance in relation to their height. Recruiters may also assess general fitness, mobility, grooming and the ability to perform safety-related duties.

Extreme dieting is not recommended. Focus instead on good health, professional grooming and physical fitness.

6. Can I become cabin crew if I wear spectacles or contact lenses?

Possibly. Vision requirements vary between airlines.

Many airlines accept candidates who wear contact lenses or spectacles, provided their corrected vision meets the airline’s medical and safety standards. Some airlines may have limits relating to eyesight, colour vision or specific eye conditions.

Candidates should review the airline’s official requirements and disclose relevant medical information honestly.

7. Can I apply if I have braces, scars, birthmarks or tattoos?

Requirements differ between airlines.

Visible tattoos are commonly restricted when wearing the airline uniform. Airlines may also assess visible scars, birthmarks, dental presentation and overall grooming during recruitment.

Having braces, scars or a birthmark does not automatically mean rejection. The location, visibility and airline policy will matter.

Students may consult IETA before applying so that we can recommend suitable preparation and airline options.

8. Do I need customer-service experience?

Previous customer-service experience is helpful but is not always compulsory.

Applicants can also demonstrate relevant skills through:

  • Retail or food-and-beverage work
  • Hotel and hospitality experience
  • Internship or part-time employment
  • School leadership or event participation
  • Volunteer work
  • Handling customers, guests or members of the public

Airlines look for evidence of communication, teamwork, responsibility, service awareness and the ability to remain calm under pressure.

9. Can fresh school leavers apply?

Yes, depending on the airline’s minimum education and age requirements.

Fresh school leavers may be suitable for a diploma or longer training programme that develops:

  • English communication
  • Customer-service skills
  • Grooming and professional image
  • Interview confidence
  • Airline and airport knowledge
  • Workplace readiness

Applicants should not rush into airline interviews without understanding the requirements and preparing properly.

10. What is the difference between cabin crew and airport ground staff?

Cabin crew work on board the aircraft and are responsible for passenger safety, service and emergency procedures.

Airport ground staff work at the airport in areas such as:

  • Check-in
  • Boarding gates
  • Passenger assistance
  • Baggage services
  • Airline lounges
  • Reservations and ticketing
  • Customer-service counters

Both careers require strong communication, customer-service ability, teamwork and professional presentation.

11. Does completing an IETA programme guarantee me an airline job?

No legitimate training provider should guarantee employment because the final hiring decision belongs to the airline or employer.

IETA helps students improve their preparation through relevant training, interview practice, English development, grooming guidance and career advice.

Success will also depend on the student’s:

  • Eligibility
  • English level
  • Attitude
  • Attendance
  • Preparation
  • Interview performance
  • Choice of airline
  • Available vacancies

This answer is important because it builds credibility and avoids an unrealistic employment promise.

12. How can the Diploma or cabin crew preparation programme help me?

The right programme can help students develop skills that are difficult to build through interview practice alone.

Depending on the programme selected, students may receive training in:

  • Airline and airport operations
  • Cabin crew duties and responsibilities
  • Customer service
  • English communication
  • Grooming and professional image
  • Interview preparation
  • Public speaking and confidence
  • Teamwork and workplace behaviour
  • Resume and job-application preparation

The Diploma is more suitable for school leavers who need broader academic and career preparation. Shorter interview or cabin crew programmes may be more suitable for diploma or degree holders who already meet the basic requirements.

13. Which programme should I choose?

The suitable programme depends on your:

  • Age
  • Education level
  • English ability
  • Work experience
  • Career objective
  • Available study duration
  • Readiness for an airline interview

A student who has just completed SPM may need a different programme from a degree holder who only needs interview preparation.
